Severe Yeast Infection

Everybody has microscopic fungi, otherwise known as yeast, living in his or her body called Candida. Candidiasis is an infection caused by a group of these fungi. The other name for these infections is a yeast infection. The good news is that an infection can usually be treated even if it gets to be a severe yeast infection. There are both internal and external infections of this type, and the treatments for candidiasis differ accordingly. In this article we will learn a little more about severe yeast infections, the treatments for them, and the differences between internal and external infections.

When the fungi are so numerous they can cause Candida yeast infections under the right conditions, usually in an area that is warm and damp. Left untreated, the small infections can turn into severe yeast infections. On rare occasions the yeast infection may spread throughout the body. In severe candidal disease, up to 75% of people may become terminally ill. Vaginal yeast infections can be caused by a change in the environment inside the vagina from numerous sources, ranging from internal antibiotics to steroids to pregnancy to menstruation.

Since the fungi are living all over our bodies, the Candida yeast infections can be both internal and external. Candida yeast infections can be inside the body like inside the mouth, vagina and inside cuts and breaks in the skin. If the infection becomes a severe yeast infection inside the body it can affect the brain, eyes, lungs, heart or blood. This is when it can become life-threatening. External yeast infections can be in the underarms, diaper area, between folds of skin, under breasts and in nail beds. Luckily, these infections are not usually severe and can be treated topically.

Treatments for yeast infections will vary depending on the type of infection from which a person is suffering. For a mild external Candida infection the treatment for candida would start with an over-the-counter nystatin powders or antifungal creams and lotions, for vaginal you can use boric acid suppositories. For an inside-the-mouth yeast infection the treatment starts with swishing an antifungal agent like nystatin inside the mouth. If this does not clear up, the next step involves prescription medication, so a trip to the doctor is in order. Vaginal yeast infections can usually be treated with over-the-counter topical medications unless they cause abdominal pain. If the Candida yeast infection becomes a severe yeast infection, you need to be at the doctor or hospital where they will start with IV antibiotics.

Since there are many types of yeast infections, some are minor such as external skin infections from various warm damp areas. Other yeast infections, meanwhile, are vaginal infections (which are the most well-known), while still others are in the mouth. By far the scariest Candida yeast infections would be a severe yeast infection attacking internal organs such as the eyes, brain, lungs and/or blood. The severe yeast infections have a high rate of being a terminal disease resulting in death if not caught quickly enough.
